VI International Elbrus Race - "You can't race any higher in Europe!!!"!

(20-23 September 2010 speed ascent to Elbrus 5642 m)

1. Goals

Revival of the tradition of an annual competition for high-speed ascent of Mount Elbrus. Development and popularization of climbing. Attracting the attention of world climbing community to the rich possibilities of recreation in the Elbrus region in particular and at the Caucasus in whole, which is especially important on the eve of the Olympic Games in Sochi, and in view of large investments allocated by the Government on the development of tourist infrastructure in the Caucasus!

2. Date and venue

Elbrus, the highest peak of Russia and Europe, is 12 km from the Main Caucasian ridge. The regular shape of its volcanic cones and slopes above 3000 m covered by glaciers, are a kind of mountain stadium. Race route  follow the normal route: Fields Azau - "refuge Barrels" – Pastukhova Rocks - Saddle - Western Elbrus. In mid-September to multi-year statistics of weather in Elbrus is a good and stable, and tourists have significantly less! Also at this time on the ascent route with high probability will not be extended parts of ice. Date of Competition "attached" to the full moon, so every year it moves, but within two or three weeks. On the Full Moon there use to be good windless, sunny weather, and at night the full moon creates additional lighting.

Registration:

until 15 September 2010 via the office of "Top Sports Travel" (with e-mail or through an application form, or by fax +7(812)3200586 , telephone  +7(812)7401012). September 19 in the hotel Elba; September 20 morning in the meadow Azau, the same day afternoon and evening at  the refuge Barrels; latest on September 21 at  the refuge Barrels just before the Qualification Start.

  • September 20, 2010 at 11.00 am - briefing and opening of the competition  on Azau – near hotel Balkaria (that is a new place !! – ask for details)
  • September 21, 2010 at 11:00 am Qualifying race start from the hut "Barrels" on the Rocks Pastukhova 4800m will - Garabashi, hut "Barrels", 3708 m.
  • 23 September 2010 - VI international ELBRUS RACE is held in three classes: "Extreme", "Classics" and "Tourism"

In case of inclement weather on the day of the competition organizers include one reserve day on 24 September. Competitors should take into consideration that day when booking a return ticket.

3. Competitors

Everyone over 18 years old with a climbing experience who paid their entry fee in the amount of  40 Euro is admitted to the competition. Participants must have appropriate insurance and a medical certificate showing the lack of restrictions on climbing and sports.

4. Competitions

The preparation and the competition procedure are supervised by  Top Sport Travel and Information Center for Climbers www.Russianclimb.com
The competition procedure will be directly carried out by the Marshal’s Crew headed by Chief Marshal. Marshals contribute to more enjoyable, more efficient, and safer racing.

Competitions are held in two phases.

4.1. Qualifications (September 21, 2010).

The participants who have passed the qualification standards will be admitted for the Elbrus Race. The standard will be calculated from the starting time until reaching the Finish line, set on the top of Pastukhov’s Rocks. The participants are considered passed if they reached the section line independently less than 2 hours of ascent and descended down to the starting place not later than at 16.00.

Party’s result is not recorded. At that time the Finish is closed. Participants should descend down and report their arrival to the Barrels to Barrel’s marshal till 16:00

 

Party’s result, will be disqualifying if party will not register before 16:00 the fact of its descend to the Barrels’s marshal!

4.2. Speed climbing (23 September 2010).

Start: 06:00 Launch site: Fields Azau, 2400 m – just in front of new ski lift station

Participants: the experience of high-altitude high-speed ascent or the personal admission of marshals

"Classic"

Start: 07:00. Launch site: Garabashi, hut "Barrels", 3708 m

Participants: having climbing experience and passed qualifying race, or by personal admission of marshals

“Tourism”

start: 03:00-05:00

Launch site: Garabashi, hut "Barrels", 3708 m

Participants: athletes having climbing experience and a time in qualifying race within interval 2 hours to 2 h 50 min. Depending on the number of participants will be allocated 1-2 guide for the ascent. To pay for their work participants should pay the fee in the amount established by the organizers

 

The time of the competitors will be defined from the starting time to the reaching of the finish line set on the top. The competitors are considered finished if they reached the section line independently and descended down to the starting place not later than at 16.00!

If you can not returning to the start before 16:00, the result of party is canceled. Control gate on the saddle should be passed before 12:00, if exceeded control time, participant removed from the race and he should go down.

Members of Class "Extreme" should cross the control gate at start area of class "Classics".

Is prohibited the use of any transport, ski, use outside help. Prohibited the use of doping drugs. Competitors to violate this rule will be disqualified. Members of Class "Extreme" could leave some equipment on Garabashi near control gate at start area of class "Classics".and peak up it passing bye .

5. The winners

Winners are determined by the best time or by highest reached altitude.

6. Awards and prizes

Winners will be awarded with diplomas and prizes, provided by the organizers and sponsors.

7. Conditions of participation and security

Each participant should be aware that the ascent of Elbrus is potentially dangerous and can involve a certain risk

For the safety and health of the responsibility borne by the participants. The organizers will provide first aid when necessary and help organize rescue work by the marshals and participants

The event organizers will check the route and inform the participants about the state of the route. Crossing start line means that You confirm the fact that Your physical abilities and climbing skills are sufficient to overcome the race route safely.

Participants must take in consideration the real weather conditions and the state of the route on the upcoming race. Equipment used by a party must comply with safety requirements.

If necessary, all parties must be willing to work as rescuers and obey the orders of marshals on route!

The organizers reserve the right to cancel the competition and / or change the rules in the event of unforeseen weather or other conditions.

This regulations is a challenge for the tournament!
